Dr. Cindy Smith earned her degree from Washington State University in 1987. She moved to Tacoma and joined The Pet Doctor family in 1989. Her interest in small animal reproductive care began to flourish, which prompted her to begin practicing Small Animal Reproductive Medicine exclusively in 1993.
There are no typical days at the office for Dr. Smith. Her appointments on any given day could range from an Infertility Workup, to a Transcervical Insemination, to a Caesarian Section. Dr. Smith frequently makes herself available outside of her scheduled office hours for emergency procedures as well for her established cases.
Dr. Smith is a Member of the Society for Theriogenology (since 2000) and a regular attendee to educational conferences on the topic of canine reproduction.
Dr. Smith has extensive personal experience with canine breeding and showing, which allows her to relate on a personal level with her clients. She bred and showed Maltese dogs for 25 years. She also competed in obedience as well as conformation and once put a Utility Dog Degree (U.D.) on her Shih Tzu!
While her days of breeding and showing Maltese dogs are behind her, she has found a new passion in showing Polish and Araucana Bantam Chickens—no handlers, no politics, no c-sections!

I am passionate about continued education and making sure I am always using humane techniques as well as the most updated scientific methods in my business. I signed an oath to use LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive) practices to make sure that my training program is not only effective, but also ethical. You can check out the organizations and certifications below. Growing up in an animal-loving family, I had many childhood experiences with all types of animals including dogs, horses, reptiles, birds and more, so I had a solid obsession for animal training from the start. Throughout high school I spent my free time out at the barn, starting young horses, training horses with behavioral issues, and riding my own horse for the high school rodeo team. Additionally, I raised puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind who assisted their blind partners all over the US and Canada. I continued on to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, majoring in Agricultural Sciences and Education, with a concentration in Animal Science. There, I progressed my training career by taking courses on animal behavior modification and working as the dog trainer for Petco. I quickly became a Mentor Trainer and began to focus on not only teaching the animals, but also teaching other people about dog training, as well. In 2013, I started Pawsitively Trained, LLC, which has been growing and thriving now for many years. I have spent time working with shelters and rescue groups, veterinary clinics, daycare facilities and dog walkers, grooming salons, breeders, working dog handlers, other trainers, and, primarily, pet owners. I believe it takes a village to raise a good dog! Having an educated village is the easiest way to streamline the process of adding more well-behaved canines to our community. Additionally, in 2019, I founded Paws for Responders, LLC. Through this program I work with emergency responders (police and fire departments, EMS, and 911 dispatch), raising and training therapy facility dogs. These dogs are co-raised with Paws for Responders and the participating facilities, and are utilized as part of emotional wellness programs to provide comfort to emergency responders. The Comfort K9s are trained using a carefully structured program and the facility handlers are also instructed throughout the process. I am so excited to be able to spread the wonderful effects of positive raising and training methods and to create such a profound impact in the lives of people who need the support.
